Feeding aquarium fish is one of the most interesting activities. You watch your pets while they eat and can make a lot of interesting observations. In our aquariums live representatives from all over the world. And in nature, each of them occupied its own niche in the food ladder.
What foods are available to the aquarist?
It is not always possible to get exactly the same food that the fish eat in their native water body. It is not possible to go to Venezuela to get food for guppies. In this and there is no need. Most of the inhabitants of our aquariums live in them not the first generation. And during this time have adapted to the menu that we can offer them. And this menu is not as meager as it may seem. The most famous live food today is moths. As well as pipefish, enchytrids, cyclops, daphnia. Also most of these same feeds are also available in dried form, which helps to survive periods when the live feeds are strained.
Feeding aquarium fish so as not to overfeed them
When feeding fish, it is necessary to remember first of all that in nature food does not fall from the sky to them. And there in their native waters they are warned against overeating a limited amount of food. In the aquarium, a generous owner can easily overfeed their pets. And this is not with malice, but from the desire to make everything as good as possible. It must be remembered that overeating is not good for anyone and obesity is dangerous for all living things.
Feed is better to give in such quantity that it was all eaten within 5-10 minutes, if it is dry or sedentary food. Or within 1-2 hours, if it is mobile crustaceans (cyclops, daphnia). What exactly is this amount? After a week or two you will automatically dial the right amount yourself. Observation, patience and you will be rewarded with the contemplation of healthy, mobile, cheerful fish. Usually for one fish of medium size (4-6cm) give 3-4 worms moth.
Separate feeding area for aquarium fish
It is desirable to accustom the fish to one feeding place, in which it is desirable to place the feeder. Feeder for dry food is a geometric figure floating on the surface, often in the form of a circle made of floating material. Pouring dry food inside this feeder, you prevent it from spreading over the entire surface of the water. Thus making life easier for yourself. Feeder for live feed (moths, trubichnik) is also a floating hoop, but in the middle of it is a grid on which the portion of feed is placed. The grid slows down the fall of worms to the bottom and fish have time to eat them before they burrow into the ground.
Also not superfluous will not be superfluous to accustom the fish to any sound stimulus, inviting them to dinner. Most often the role of such an irritant performs a finger tapping on the glass of the aquarium. Such a conditioned reflex in the first place will save you time fish will swim to the meal just when you need it, and in the second again worms thrown into the feeder will not go unnoticed and not burrow into the ground, which will prevent water turbidity.
Cleanliness is the key to health
After feeding, all uneaten food must be removed from the aquarium. So that it does not contaminate the water.
Once a week you can give your pets a rest day – leave them without food. During this day they will pick up the remnants of food, if any, left on the bottom and build up their appetite.
If you go away for the weekend to the countryside, it is also more useful to leave the fish without food. Do not stock up on food for two or three days.
Following these simple guidelines will save you a lot of frustration.
